KKR vs LSG: Was Finn Allen really out? Questions raised on catch controversy, video going viral

In an exciting match of IPL 2026, a big controversy has arisen regarding the standard of umpiring at the historic Eden Gardens ground in Kolkata. A wicket created a ruckus in the initial overs of the match played between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), which has raised questions on the technology and wisdom of the field umpires. This controversy is related to the catch out of Kolkata opener Finn Allen. Whose video is becoming increasingly viral on social media. Let us tell you that this match was played on 9 April.

Finn Allen was out in the second over of the match after scoring just 9 runs. He was caught by Digvesh Rathi at third man. At first glance, it appeared to be an easy catch and Allen left the crease without any opposition. Later, when TV replays and videos of the catch went viral on social media, there was an uproar in the cricket world. It was clearly visible in the replays that the fielder’s foot was touching the boundary cushion, which would have given ‘not out’ and six runs as per the rules.

Controversy arose over the catch near the boundary

The video footage and replays clearly showed that when Digvesh Rathi took the catch, his foot was touching the advertising cushion near the boundary. The movement of the boundary cushion was strong evidence that the fielder’s foot had touched the boundary line. According to the rules of cricket, the on-field umpire should have taken the help of a third umpire in such a sensitive situation. Surprisingly, no umpire considered it necessary to investigate this controversial catch.

Whose mistake was the biggest?

In this entire matter, a debate has erupted on three levels of responsibility. The first mistake was that of the on-field umpires, who did not follow the procedure of ‘soft signal’ or ‘check’. On the other hand, batsman Finn Allen is also being criticized that he left the field without asking for re-check. At the same time, questions are being raised on the sportsmanship of fielder Digvesh Rathi whether he did not realize that he was touching the boundary? However, this incident has once again intensified the debate about the falling standards of umpiring and incomplete use of technology.
