‘Where do you write such language in the petition?’ Supreme Court rejects PIL to stop caste census, CJI strongly reprimands

Supreme Court has rejected a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking to stop the caste-based census. Chief Justice during the hearing suryakant He seemed very angry with the petitioner and strongly reprimanded him for the language used in the petition.

During the hearing, CJI Surya Kant told the petitioner-
“How did you write such language in the petition? Where do you get such abusive language from?”

in the back Justice Joymalya Bagchi And Justice Vipul M Pancholi were also included. Rejecting the petition, the court made it clear that such language is not acceptable.

In the petition, a demand was made to direct the Central Government to stop the caste based census. Apart from this, an appeal was also made to make policies to provide economic incentives to families with single children.

even before this Supreme Court On February 2, the apex court had refused to hear another similar petition, in which questions were raised on the process of recording caste data in the 2027 census.

According to the government plan, the 2027 census of the country will:

  • First fully digital census will happen
  • And for the first time since 1931 comprehensive caste based data will be included

The CJI also advised the petitioner to first approach the concerned authorities on such issues. He said that only when all efforts fail, one should approach the court.

This decision of the Supreme Court clearly indicates that the judiciary looks seriously at not only the content of the petitions but also their language and presentation. Also, the court’s stance on sensitive issues like caste-based census seems to be to stay away from interference for the time being.
