“The decision should have gone to the third umpire”; Rovman Powell raised questions on Digvesh Rathi’s catch
In the IPL, on Thursday (April 9), an exciting match was played between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Eden Gardens, which LSG won by 3 wickets on the basis of Mukul Chaudhary’s explosive batting. During KKR’s innings, opener Finn Allen was caught by LSG spinner Digvesh Rathi, which led to controversy. After the match, Rovman Powell said that it should have been sent to the third umpire.
“It was a big mistake on their part, but we won’t dwell on it and say we lost two points tonight, but the umpires on the field should have referred the decision to the third umpire,” Rovman told reporters at the post-match press conference.
Prince Yadav was bowling the second over of KKR’s innings. The fourth ball of the over, Prince bowled a back-of-a-length delivery, and Finn Allen hit it across the line, but took the top edge. The ball went to Digvesh standing at third man. It looked like the ball would go far, but Rathi composed himself at the edge of the boundary line and stood to his left to take the catch with both hands. Rathi was very close to the boundary line, and the umpire seemed happy with what happened. Allen was given out. The decision was not referred to the third umpire, and replays later showed that Rathi had probably stepped on the cushion. However, nothing could be confirmed from the replays.
Finn Allen was out after scoring 9 runs on 8 balls. On not winning a match at home, Powell said, “It’s very disappointing. You want to make Kolkata, you want to make Eden Gardens your fortress. It’s your home, it’s your home where your fans are behind you. So it always feels good to win at home. But, unfortunately, we couldn’t do that tonight.”
Powell praised Mukul Chaudhary’s batting. Talking about the match, KKR had scored 181 runs while batting first. LSG defeated KKR by 3 wickets on the basis of Mukul Chaudhary’s unbeaten inning of 54 runs with the help of 7 sixes in 27 balls.
