Nitish Kumar takes oath as Rajya Sabha member, will soon resign from the post of CM of Bihar
New Delhi. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar took oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha on Friday, paving the way for the appointment of a new Chief Minister in the state. Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan administered the oath to him during a brief ceremony in his chamber. The Chairman later also wished him good luck on becoming a member of the Upper House and returning to Parliament. Nitish Kumar took oath in Hindi.
During this, Union Minister and House leader J. P. Nadda, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Panchayati Raj Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Ramnath Thakur and Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal were also present. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary was also present at the swearing-in ceremony.
Janata Dal-United (JDU) working president Sanjay Kumar Jha, Congress chief whip in Rajya Sabha Jairam Ramesh, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP and former Union Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy and BJP chief whip in Lok Sabha Sanjay Jaiswal were also present during the oath-taking.

With Kumar assuming the role of Rajya Sabha member, his nearly two decade long rule in Bihar is going to end. He will soon resign from the post of Chief Minister and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is likely to choose the new Chief Minister of Bihar on April 14.
Nitish Kumar resigned from the membership of the State Legislative Council on March 30 after being elected to the Rajya Sabha. He was elected to the Upper House of Parliament on March 16 and had to step down as a member of the Legislative Council within a period of 14 days.
