29% jump in EV sales in Delhi, report surprises; Know what is the reason

The war against pollution in the country’s capital now seems to be yielding results. According to the latest data, a huge increase in the speed of electric vehicles (EV) has been recorded in Delhi. There has been a huge jump of 29 percent in EV registrations in Delhi during the financial year 2025-26. While last year 83,512 electric vehicles were registered, this year this figure has crossed 1.07 lakh.

However, despite this increasing popularity of electric vehicles, the reign of petrol vehicles still persists. According to the analysis of independent research organization ‘Envirocatalysts’, vehicles running on petrol and ethanol still have more than 73 percent share in the total auto market of Delhi. It is clear that people are changing technology now, but it will take time to give up old habits and trust.

Demand for diesel vehicles is at its lowest level

Statistics show that even though EV sales have increased, registration of petrol vehicles has also increased from 5.30 lakh to 6.21 lakh. The interesting thing is that the people of Delhi now seem to have completely lost their attachment to diesel vehicles. Registration of diesel vehicles has dropped to 11,498, which is the lowest level since 2019. On the contrary, hybrid vehicles (running on both oil and electricity) have made a tremendous run and their figure has increased from 15 thousand to directly beyond 32 thousand.

Why did EV sales surge?

Sunil Dahiya of Envirocatalysts, while talking to PTI, said that the graph of petrol may come down in the coming times. The main reason for this is the new EV policy of Delhi government. ‘Scrapage incentive’ has been made the main weapon in this policy. That is, if you scrap your BS-IV or older vehicle at an authorized center, then you will get huge financial benefits by purchasing a new electric vehicle. For this you just have to buy a new EV within 6 months of getting the scrap certificate.

The entire emphasis of the government is on making electric vehicles affordable for the common man. There is a possibility that road tax and registration fees will be completely waived on electric vehicles up to Rs 30 lakh. This relaxation may continue till March 2030. At present, the share of EV in the total market of Delhi is about 12.7 percent, but seeing the way the craze is increasing in two-wheeler and private four-wheeler segments, this figure may soon reach close to that of petrol.
