Stretch marks during pregnancy? Know preventive measures from Ayurveda
Many changes occur in the body of women during pregnancy. One of these common problems is stretch marks, also known as striae gravidarum. These appear as light or dark lines that appear around the abdomen, thighs, hips, and sometimes the breasts. Even though these are not completely harmful, they become a cause of concern and discomfort for many women.
In fact, as the stomach grows during pregnancy, the skin stretches rapidly. When the inner layers of the skin cannot fully handle this stretch, small marks are formed there, which are called stretch marks. Initially they are pink or red in color, but with time they become pale white.
It is believed in Ayurveda that if the skin gets nourishment from within and proper care from outside, then these marks can be reduced to a great extent or their intensity can be prevented. For this, the use of natural oils and herbs is said to be very beneficial.
Medicines like sandalwood, vetiver (ushir) and basil have special importance in Ayurvedic remedies. It is advisable to make a paste and apply it regularly on the stomach with light oil. It is believed that this keeps the skin soft and also provides relief from itching and burning sensation caused by stretch. It is especially advisable to start such care from the fourth month of pregnancy and continuing it throughout the pregnancy can give better results.
Apart from this, oil or paste prepared from Karanja leaves is also considered helpful in maintaining the elasticity of the skin. It nourishes the skin and reduces dryness, thereby reducing the chances of formation of stretch marks to some extent.
It is also said in Ayurveda that one should not scratch the skin in case of itching during pregnancy. Many times people rub the skin unknowingly, due to which stretch marks can increase further. For mild itching, it is better to use natural oils or consult a doctor.
Also, a balanced diet also plays a very important role. If the body gets enough water, fruits, green vegetables and nutrients, the skin remains strong from inside. This can also reduce the possibility of stretch marks.
However, it is also important to understand that it is not always possible to prevent stretch marks completely, as they are part of the body’s natural changes. But with proper care, regular oil massage and Ayurvedic measures, these can be reduced to a great extent and the skin can be kept healthy.
