An old tradition

Sesame oil has been prepared for the consecration of Lord Badri Vishal at the palace in Narendranagar, Uttarakhand. The Tehri royal family is said to have preserved this tradition since long ago. It is believed that this oil used for anointing God before opening the doors is considered very sacred. That oil is prepared in a special way.

Oil is prepared by married women

Under the leadership of Maharani Mala Rajyalakshmi Shah, married women perform the ritual of making oil. Sesame oil is prepared by cooking and purifying special herbs. Sesame oil is considered highly nutritious according to Ayurveda, which is why it is used during Chardham Yatra. The prepared oil is poured into a silver vessel and worshiped before the ritual. After the pooja, this oil kalasa is called ‘gadu ghada’. Rituals are performed in the presence of Dimri central religious panchayat and royal family.
