New Delhi. Defense cooperation between India and Israel has steadily strengthened over the last two decades. Israel is now among India’s major defense partners, supplying modern missile systems, drone technology, surveillance equipment and small arms. Defense cooperation between the two countries is likely to deepen further in the coming times.
1. Modern missiles and precision weapons
India is acquiring many state-of-the-art missiles and precision guided systems from Israel. These include precision-targeting air-dropped weapons like the Spice series bombs, which are capable of hitting targets even in difficult conditions. Apart from this, supersonic air-to-ground missiles like Rampage provide the ability to carry out precise strikes over long distances.
2. Increase in long-range strike capability
India is also considering air launched ballistic missiles like Air LORA, which are capable of accurately striking remote targets. At the same time, the new generation missile technology is further strengthening India’s stand-off strike capability.
3. Small Arms and Infantry Systems
A large number of modern weapons like Negev Light Machine Gun are being inducted from Israel for the Indian Army. Along with this, supply of modern rifle systems like Close Quarter Battle Carbine is also under discussion, which will increase the firepower of the infantry.
4. Drones and surveillance technology
Surveillance drones like Israel’s Heron have been playing an important role for the Indian Army for a long time. They help in border surveillance and reconnaissance operations by flying at high altitude. Apart from this, lightering munition drones like Harop are capable of accurately attacking enemy targets.
5. Cooperation in air defense system
The Barak-8 missile defense system is the most successful example of joint cooperation between India and Israel. It provides medium and long range air defense capability. Apart from this, short range air defense systems like Spider are also part of the Indian security architecture.
