Iran-Israel crisis: Questions on India’s foreign policy, Pakistan becomes mediator

Amidst the increasing tension between Iran, America and Israel in the Middle East and the alleged ceasefire, a heated debate has started regarding India’s foreign policy. Allegations are being made that in this entire incident, India remained only a ‘spectator’ instead of playing an active role, while Pakistan strengthened its position on the international stage by becoming a mediator. After the statement of former Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha, the discussion has intensified whether India missed a big diplomatic opportunity?

Claim of ceasefire after 40 days of tension in Iran

Tension increased amid allegations of attack on America and Israel in Iran. After about 40 days, a ‘light’ ceasefire came to light. This ceasefire is not considered completely reliable. He further said that it is claimed that Pakistan played the role of mediation in this ceasefire. Pakistan’s foreign policy is being described as ‘balanced and strategic’. Its strong relations with America are also being mentioned. Former Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha described Pakistan as close to America and said that Trump calls the Army Chief there and takes him for lunch.

Why were questions raised on India’s foreign policy?

It is alleged that India limited itself to only ‘appeal for peace’. Foreign Ministry’s statement ‘War should end, there should be dialogue and diplomacy’ criticized that India did not exert active diplomatic pressure.

Why couldn’t India show strength?

It was claimed that despite being a friend of all three countries, India could not play a decisive role. The allegation that India did not take any concrete initiative on the spot was seen as a ‘passive foreign policy’. Former Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha said that we could not show strength because just two days before the war, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Israel and hugged the Prime Minister there and showed the world that India stands with Israel, meaning it stands with America.

Further, he said that when America and Israel attacked Iran, how can we disappoint our masters, that is, he said sarcastically that we are our masters and they are our masters, right? That’s why we remained silent and could not do anything.
