Flight from faith to economy: Uttar Pradesh on the way from Buddhist circuit to becoming spiritual capital

Lucknow, 10 April. The goal of making Uttar Pradesh the spiritual capital of the world now seems to be getting a solid foundation. The Buddhist circuit spanning from Sarnath to Kushinagar and Shravasti to Kapilvastu is not only becoming a center of faith, but is also emerging as a strong pillar of global tourism, investment and cultural diplomacy. The International Buddhist Conclave-2026 recently held in Kushinagar has opened the doors to new possibilities in this direction. The Buddhist circuit of Uttar Pradesh is now moving beyond religious tourism and becoming an engine of economic development.

The arrival of more than 82 lakh tourists in the year 2025 at the major Buddhist sites of the state – Sarnath, Kushinagar, Shravasti, Kaushambi, Sankisa and Kapilvastu – is proof that UP has become an essential destination for the global Buddhist community. A spokesperson of the state government said that efforts are being made to connect these places with world class facilities. Better road and air connectivity, digital guidance, modern tourism facilities and international standard services are being developed to provide a comfortable and attractive experience to foreign tourists.

Along with this, hotel industry, transport, tour guides, handicrafts and local products are also getting new momentum, thereby strengthening the local economy. The recently concluded International Buddhist Conclave-2026 in Kushinagar has further strengthened the global identity of UP. More than 2,300 devotees participated in the event, while representatives from several countries including Thailand, Japan, Myanmar, Bhutan and Nepal gave it an international character.

The receipt of investment proposals worth about Rs 3,000 crore during the conclave is an indication that the Buddhist Circuit is now becoming a center of attraction from the investment point of view. An official said that the policy of promoting religious tourism under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is giving a new direction to the economy of the state. An important role of Buddhist Circuit has been decided in the roadmap of ‘Developed Uttar Pradesh@2047’. Under this, a target has been set to increase the state’s contribution in tourism-based gross value addition (GVA) from the current 9.2 percent to 16 percent by 2047.

There is also a plan to increase the number of UNESCO recognized heritage sites from seven to 20. This sacred land associated with Lord Buddha – where he gave his first sermon and attained Mahaparinirvana – is today moving towards forging a new global identity. Well-planned policies, success of international events and increasing investment proposals are indications that the Buddhist circuit of Uttar Pradesh is going to touch new heights in the times to come, both spiritually and economically.
