CSK’s victory without Dhoni became ‘rare’: Chennai won without MS after 16 years, then Delhi was in front

IPL Updates: In the Indian Premier League, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has broken a record which is very special and shocking in itself. The team has registered victory without MS Dhoni on the field after a long wait of 16 years. The surprising thing is that once again the same team was in front in this historic victory – Delhi Capitals. This was only the 9th time in the history of CSK when the team took the field without Dhoni. Out of these 9 matches, the team has won only 2 matches so far. That is, in the absence of Dhoni, the team’s winning percentage has been very low, which clearly shows his importance.

History repeated after 16 years

CSK registered its first win without Dhoni on 19 March 2010. Even at that time, Delhi team (then Delhi Daredevils) was in front. After this, the team played 7 consecutive matches without Dhoni, but faced defeat in all. Now on 11 April 2026, CSK finally registered its second win after 16 years—and once again it was Delhi Capitals. This coincidence makes this victory even more interesting. The losing streak continued in the intervening years

In the absence of Dhoni, the performance of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) continued to look weak. In the year 2010, the team had to face defeat against Punjab Kings and RCB. After this, the situation did not change much in 2019 and the team lost the matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians. Even in the 2026 season, CSK, which entered the field without MS Dhoni, had to face defeat against Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings and RCB. These continuous failures made it clear that Dhoni’s absence has a deep impact on the team’s balance and confidence.

Dhoni is out due to injury

MS Dhoni is a part of CSK this season, but remained out of the initial matches due to injury. He was retained as an uncapped player for Rs 4 crore. Currently, he has been out of the team for about two weeks, but is expected to return to the field soon.
In his absence, Sanju Samson is handling the wicketkeeping responsibility of the team. As special as this victory of CSK is, it also shows how important Dhoni is for the team. Only two wins in 16 years – this figure itself tells how much of a difference the presence of ‘Captain Cool’ makes for CSK. Overall, this victory is not just a match, but the end of a long wait and a big proof of Dhoni’s importance.
