West Bengal Assembly Election 2026: Election Commission fixed the number of voters for the first phase of West Bengal Assembly elections, will the Supreme Court order to add the names of those approved by the tribunal?
New Delhi. Voting for the assembly elections is to be held in two phases in West Bengal. The first round of voting for the West Bengal Assembly elections will take place on April 23. For this, the Election Commission has announced the number of voters. According to the Election Commission, 3 crore 60 lakh 77 thousand 171 people will be able to take part in the first round of voting in the West Bengal Assembly elections. Among these, the number of male voters is 1 crore 84 lakh 99 thousand 496, the number of female voters is 1 crore 75 lakh 77 thousand 210 and the number of third gender voters is 465. Now the important question is whether the Supreme Court will order to add the names of voters who have received approval from the tribunal under the special power?

There is a hearing on SIR in West Bengal in the Supreme Court on Monday. In the last hearing, TMC had demanded that the voters who get approval from the tribunal should be included in the voter list and get the right to vote. At the same time, the Election Commission has frozen the voter list on April 6 for the first round of voting in the West Bengal Assembly elections and on April 9 for the second round of voting. That means, without the decision of the Supreme Court, no voter’s name will be added to the voter list of West Bengal. The Supreme Court had earlier indicated that even after getting approval from the tribunal, it would not be right to add the names of voters in the voter list this time. Supreme Court Justice Jaimalya Bagchi had said that this would create chaos. Also, there will be no justice from other voters.

Ruling Mamata Banerjee and her party TMC are continuously targeting the Election Commission on the issue of SIR in West Bengal. Mamta Banerjee and TMC allege that the Election Commission in collaboration with BJP has deleted the names of their voters. At the same time, the Election Commission says that it is its right to conduct SIR and the voter list is being purified through it. Whereas, BJP alleges that Mamata Banerjee prepared her vote bank by giving permission to Bangladeshi and Rohingya infiltrators to settle illegally. After SIR in West Bengal, names of about 91 lakh voters have been deleted so far. These also include 58 lakh dead, double and migrated voters.
