America strict on Strait of Hormuz, Trump hints at blockade
Amidst the increasing tension between America and Iran, US President Donald Trump has given a big and strict statement indicating that America may soon tighten control over the movement of ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said that Washington is preparing to start a blockade of ships entering or exiting this important sea route. His statement has come at a time when the talks between the two countries could not reach any concrete result.
Trump made allegations
Trump alleged that Iran has not followed through on its assurances to keep this important waterway safe and open. He said the threat of sea mines from Iran has already affected international shipping. According to him, when ship owners fear that mines may be laid somewhere in the sea, they avoid taking risks, which affects business activities.
He also told that long talks lasted for about 20 hours with Iranian officials in Islamabad under the mediation of Pakistan. In this conversation, agreement was reached on many issues, but the most important issue was that no agreement could be reached on Iran’s nuclear program. Trump reiterated that America will not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons under any circumstances and its stance on this issue will remain as tough as before.
Trump’s warning
The US President also said that the US will take steps to remove possible mines laid in the strait and will also take action against ships that allegedly deliver “illegal fees” to Iran. He warned that such ships will not be allowed to move safely.
Trump termed Iran’s activities as “extortion” at the global level and said that if the US military or any commercial ship was targeted, a strong response would be given. He said in a strict tone that the consequences of any attack would be very serious.
Apart from this, Trump indicated that other countries can also support America in this possible blockade. However, he did not take anyone’s name. He also claimed that Iran’s military power has already been greatly weakened and its navy and air defense systems have been largely disabled.
