PM Modi sought support from the opposition regarding ‘Women’s Reservation Bill’, Mallikarjun Kharge also put this big condition in return

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written a letter to all political parties seeking support to pass necessary amendments in the Women’s Reservation Bill. He said that a special session of Parliament is going to start from April 16, in which the Nari Shakti Vandan Act will be discussed.

What did PM Modi write in the letter?

PM Modi wrote that after much deliberation, the time has come to implement this law in its true sense. He says that the 2029 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections should be conducted with reservation for women. This will strengthen democracy, increase women’s participation and increase public confidence.

He appealed to all the MPs to support this amendment. This is not an issue of any one party, but a question of responsibility towards women and future generations.

Kharge’s sharp reaction

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge gave a strong reply to PM Modi’s letter. He said that the government is seeking cooperation from the opposition without giving any detailed information. Kharge alleged that the central government is trying to implement this bill in a hurry so that instead of empowering women, it can only take political advantage.

Kharge reminded that when this law was passed in the year 2023, Congress had demanded that it be implemented immediately, but now 30 months have passed. He said that no meaningful discussion can be had without complete details of delimitation and other issues.

Demand for all-party meeting

Kharge laid down a clear condition in his letter that after April 29, 2026, when the current elections are over, the government should call an all-party meeting. In this, all aspects related to delimitation and constitutional amendment should be discussed in detail. He wrote that the special session has been called during the state elections, which confirms that the government is rushing for political gains.

What is Nari Shakti Vandan Act?

There is a provision in the Nari Shakti Vandan Act 2023 to give 33 percent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and Assemblies. Now the government wants to implement it before the 2029 elections through amendment. This process also includes the issue of increasing the number of Lok Sabha seats to 816 and delimitation.
