Andhra Pradesh’s new initiative: Drones will deliver medicines to remote areas, speeding up healthcare services
Hyderabad. To strengthen healthcare facilities in remote and tribal areas, the Andhra Pradesh government has launched a unique initiative. Drones are now delivering medicines and medical samples to hard-to-reach areas, making it easier to provide timely treatment to patients.
Drone delivery of medicines and samples
This project is being implemented in remote tribal areas of Alluri Sitarama Raju district. The Health Department, in collaboration with the district administration, RTGS and UPS Foundation, implemented this initiative with the help of technology partner Redwing.
Paderu Medical College Connected Network
Drone service connects Paderu Medical College and Government General Hospital with smaller health centers. This allows for faster delivery of diagnostic samples to the lab and timely delivery of essential medicines.
1,000 flights, 40,000 km journey
To date, more than 1,000 drone flights have been completed under this initiative. These flights have covered a total distance of more than 40,000 kilometers and delivered over 25,000 medical products.
Each drone is capable of carrying a payload of approximately 2 kilograms and is equipped with cold chain technology, ensuring the quality of medicines and blood units.
Delays in remote areas will be eliminated.
In mountainous and forested areas, lack of road connectivity has been a common cause of delays in treatment. Drone technology has largely addressed this problem, making healthcare faster, safer, and more effective.
The state government aims to expand this model to other districts
in the future so that better health facilities can be provided in rural and tribal areas as well.
This initiative is not only an example of better use of technology, but is also being considered a big step towards providing health services to the last mile.
