Health Tips: Are you also troubled by cough at night, adopt these home remedies, get better sleep!

Are you troubled by cough that comes at night? Cough that comes during the day causes more trouble at night. Sometimes it gets worse when a person lies down. However, these are some remedies that can help in getting a better sleep by providing relief from night cough.

  1. Drink herbal tea with honey- Make a habit of drinking a mug of decaffeinated tea before sleeping. “Any warm liquid can help break up the mucus in your airways.” Add some honey.
  2. Sleep on your side – When it comes to nighttime coughing, gravity is your enemy. All the post nasal drainage and mucus you swallow during the day gets backed up and causes a burning sensation in your throat when you lie down at night. Try defying gravity by propping yourself up on some pillows when you sleep.
  3. Another trick for people with acid reflux is to stick wooden blocks under the head of the bed to raise it 4 inches. From that angle, you can keep the acids down in your stomach where they won’t irritate your throat. Of course, you have to get your partner’s okay first.
  4. Use steam with caution. Dry airways can make your cough worse. You may find relief by taking a shower or bath before bed — or just sitting in a steamy bathroom. Edelman has one caveat: “If you have asthma, steam may actually make a cough worse.”
  5. Prepare your bedside. If you start coughing at night, keep everything you need near your bed – a glass of water, cough medicine or drops, and anything that helps. The sooner you can stop a coughing attack, the better. Persistent coughing irritates your airways, which can make your nighttime problems last longer.
  6. Keep the bed clean. If you have a cough and are prone to allergies, pay attention to your bedding. Dust mites – tiny creatures that eat dead skin flakes and lurk in bedding – are a common allergy trigger. To get rid of them, wash all your bedding in hot water every week, says Edelman.
  7. Consider therapy. Over-the-counter cough medicines can help in two ways. An expectorant can help loosen the mucus. Cough suppressants inhibit the cough reflex and reduce the urge to cough. Check the label carefully to make sure you are getting the medicine that is right for your cough. Ask your pharmacist or doctor if you are not sure.
  8. See your doctor. If you’ve been coughing at night for more than 7 days, it’s time to check with your doctor. It may take some time, but together, you and your doctor can find the cause—and make your nights peaceful again.
