“It doesn’t matter whether Iran comes back for talks or not.”

Following the failure of ceasefire talks in Pakistan, US President Donald Trump said it does not matter to him whether Iran resumes talks with the US or not. Trump clearly said, “I don’t care whether they (Iran) come back or not. Even if they don’t come back, I don’t mind.” After returning from Florida, he told this to reporters at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland.

Additionally, the US President said that during weekend ceasefire talks in Islamabad led by Vice President JD Vance, there were indications that Iran was trying to acquire nuclear weapons. Trump firmly stated that Iran would not have nuclear weapons.

Even when the US delegation was discussing a ceasefire with the Iranian party in Islamabad, Trump had said that it would not make any difference to him whether there is an agreement with Tehran or not. “Whatever happens, we have victory,” he told reporters outside the White House on Saturday (April 11). “Maybe they compromise or not, it doesn’t matter. From America’s point of view it’s our victory,” he added.

21-hour face-to-face talks in Islamabad between the US and Iran ended without any agreement, leaving the future of the fragile two-week ceasefire uncertain. Vice President J.D. Vance told reporters that it was important to see a clear commitment from Iran that it would not attempt to build a nuclear weapon nor acquire the means necessary to acquire one.

The US delegation led by Vance and the Iranian team led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf discussed ways to advance the ceasefire. The talks took place in an already tense environment due to deep differences and ongoing Israeli attacks on Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Iran’s President also said that his country is ready for a balanced and just agreement. However, failed negotiations have dashed hopes of reopening the Strait of Hormuz to stabilize the global energy market. At the same time, there is uncertainty about whether America will resume military action against Iran or not.
