The main objective of which is to discuss the implementation of ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Act’ (Women’s Reservation Bill) and 33% reservation in legislative bodies. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi wrote in Regional parties fielded 14.4 percent women candidates and national parties fielded 11.8 percent women candidates. Moreover, about 150 Lok Sabha seats (which is about 27.6% of the total seats) did not have even a single woman candidate. According to the recently released ADR report, out of 4,666 MPs/MLAs across the country, only 464 (i.e. 10%) are women. These include 74 (14%) of the 543 MPs of the 18th Lok Sabha and 390 (9%) of the 4,123 MLAs who are women.
On the participation of women in the current elections, he wrote, ‘The situation is similar in the upcoming assembly elections in states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu (TN) and West Bengal (WB). Among the 140 assembly seats in Kerala, major political parties have fielded a very limited number of women candidates—CPI(M) 12, Congress 9, BJP 14 and CPI 5. At the same time, for the first time in its history, the Indian Union Muslim League has given two seats to women candidates. In West Bengal, Trinamool Congress has included 52 women candidates in its list of 291 candidates. In Tamil Nadu, the DMK has given 18 of its 164 seats to women, while the AIADMK has given 20 of its 167 seats to women. Here too, no party has been able to come close to the figure of 33% as promised to the women of the country.
Despite the support in the historic passing of the bill in September 2023, none of the parties in the Lok Sabha elections came anywhere close to fielding 33 percent women candidates with regional parties fielding 14.4 percent of candidates and national parties 11.8 percent women…

It is noteworthy that in its previous tenure, the Modi government had got the Nari Shakti Vandan Act (106th Constitutional Amendment, 2023) passed by the Parliament. Which was supported by the ruling party and opposition MPs. It is a landmark law to reserve 33% (one-third) of the seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Nari Shakti Vandan Act aims to increase women’s participation in decision making through political empowerment. This reservation will be implemented after delimitation and census.
