Ahaan Panday set to play a gangster in Ali Abbas Zafar’s next YRF venture: Report
Following his explosive debut in Saiyaara, Bollywood’s newest sensation I am Panday is ready to pivot from his “musical romantic hero” image to a grittier, more intense role. Variety India has exclusively revealed that Panday will portray a gangster in an upcoming high-octane action-romance directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and produced by Yash Raj Films (YRF).
The shift marks a significant departure for the young actor, who rose to fame playing a troubled musician in Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara. In this new project, Panday will reportedly be seen in a raw and aggressive avatar, caught in a fierce battle for love. To prepare for the physically demanding role, Panday has already begun rigorous training in hand-to-hand combat and weapon handling, ensuring he embodies the rugged persona required for Zafar’s signature large-scale storytelling.
The film’s ensemble cast adds further weight to the project. Sharvari stars as the female lead, while Aaishvary Thackeray has been cast as the primary antagonist. In a nostalgic turn for fans of classic Bollywood, Jimmy Shergill joins the cast in a pivotal role, marking his return to the YRF fold over two decades after the iconic Mohabbatein. Superstar Bobby Deol is also part of the lineup, though specific details regarding his and Shergill’s characters are being kept strictly under wraps.
Production officially kicked off on April 3 in Mumbai. After completing the local schedule this month, the crew is expected to move to London in May for an extensive international leg. Directed by the man behind blockbusters like Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai, this yet-to-be-titled film is eyeing a wrap by July 2024, with plans for a major theatrical release in early 2027. Given Panday’s massive Gen-Z following and Zafar’s track record, the film is already being hailed as one of the most anticipated action entertainers of the coming years.
