Muizzu’s missile diplomacy, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gore got a shock in Maldives, meeting canceled at the last moment
News India Live, Digital Desk: Diplomatic distance between Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu and America has now started coming to the surface. US Ambassador to India and Donald Trump’s special envoy Sergio Gore, who reached Maldives last month, had to return empty handed without meeting President Muizzu. In diplomatic circles, this is being considered a big ‘snub’ (setback) for America. Muizzu canceled this scheduled meeting to be held on 23 March 2026 at the very last moment, after which Sergio Gore had to return from Male to Delhi. Rejected the offer of ‘secret meeting’, tension at its peak. According to sources, after the meeting was cancelled, the US Ambassador had requested Muizzu’s office through diplomatic channels to reconsider. In response, the Maldivian government proposed a ‘behind closed doors’ (secret meeting) with the President. However, the 39-year-old powerful US envoy rejected the offer for a confidential meeting. He believed that such a secret meeting on an official visit was against protocol. It is noteworthy that Sergio Gore met the Foreign and Defense Ministers of Maldives, but maintained distance from the Head of State. The Iran-Israel war became the reason for Muizzu’s displeasure. The real reason behind Muizzu’s distance from the American envoy is now coming to light. Actually, the President of Maldives is strongly against the attacks by America and Israel on Iran. Muizzu, who has presented himself as a staunch opponent of Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel, did not want to be seen in public with any US representative amid this war. He clearly said that he does not want to have any discussion with America regarding the war in the Middle East, nor will he allow the land of Maldives to be used for any military campaign. Muizzu is surrounded at home, Maldives is on the verge of poverty. On one hand, Muizzu is showing eyes to powerful countries like America at the international level, while on the other hand, his domestic politics and economy are in deep crisis. Muizzu’s party has faced a crushing defeat in the recently held local municipal elections. Along with this, the financial condition of Maldives is also poor. To avoid poverty, Maldives has now requested India to rollover its $400 million loan (extend the deadline). Now striking a balance between India and America has become a big challenge for Muizzu who is inclined towards China.
