The Wall of Madrid: When 12 y/o Veer Kapadia’s heroics secured India a historic win

In a landmark moment for Indian grassroots football, the Conscient Sports Real Madrid Foundation India U12 team emerged as champions at the Real Madrid Foundation World Challenge 2026.

Held at the iconic Ciudad Real Madrid in Valdebebas, the young Indian side delivered a masterclass in tactical discipline and attacking flair, culminating in a historic 3-0 victory over Brazil in the final.

The team’s dominance was underscored by a rock-solid defence and their goalkeeper Veer Kapadia, whose performances had everyone gushing.

“When the final whistle blew, it took some time for it to sink in, but after that, we realised that we had just beaten Brazil and won the challenge. So, we were all really overjoyed”, explained Veer, recalling the moment that cemented the team’s victory.

The tournament, conducted annually during Easter week, is a premier global youth scouting event. The 2026 edition featured over 80 teams and 1,000 young athletes from regions including Europe, the Americas, and South Asia.

Adding to the prestige, Real Madrid legend Roberto Carlos, acting as the tournament ambassador, praised the technical growth and composure of the Indian youngsters.

However, for Veer, the win against Uruguay in the semifinals was the moment that will stay with him for a long time. “The best moment was when we won the semifinals on penalties.

The entire game, the score was 1-0, and in the last moments, they scored a goal. We were happier when we won the semis than the finals. It was a really breathtaking match”, said Veer.

Goalkeeping comes naturally to Veer, who enjoys the mental battles that even the best goalkeepers have to fight inside their own heads after making a fatal mistake.

“When I was seven years old, I played my first tournament for Conscient. That’s when my coach asked who wanted to be a goalkeeper, and I was like, ‘I want to’. My coaches have helped me a lot and taught me how to have a strong mentality even when I concede a goal. They taught me to stay in the game and never give up.”

The India squad at the event presented a unified national front, with players scouted from Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad through the Conscient Sports program.

Playing at Real Madrid’s training ground was obviously a big deal for the youngster, who idolises goalkeeping legends, Gianluigi Buffon and Iker Casillas.

“When I was playing there, it felt like I was playing at a professional level because the grounds were really well-maintained and the size was really big. So that was a change we had to adapt to. But otherwise, we had a lot of fun.”

“Conscient Sports also took us for a tour to the Bernabéu, and that was when we saw the whole stadium and saw many facts about Madrid, the club itself”, said a beaming Veer.

This victory signifies a massive leap for the Indian sports ecosystem. It proves that with structured grassroots training, Indian talent can not only compete with but also defeat traditional footballing powerhouses.

For now, though, Veer has only one aim.

“I’m hoping that the Indian team manages to play the FIFA World Cup one day and win it, and I hope that I’m in that team”, he signed off.
