Preparation to implement UCC in Chhattisgarh, committee will be formed, decision in cabinet meeting

Vishnu Dev Sai government is now preparing to implement Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Chhattisgarh. A historic decision regarding Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has been taken in the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai on 15 April 2026. The Cabinet has decided to constitute a high-level committee in Chhattisgarh, which will prepare the draft of UCC after taking comprehensive suggestions from citizens, organizations and experts of the state.

This committee will be headed by retired Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai. The Chief Minister was authorized to nominate the committee members. The draft prepared on the basis of the recommendations of the committee will be presented in the Assembly after approval from the Cabinet under due process, so that a uniform and transparent civil law system can be established in the state. This committee may also invite feedback through web portal.

While addressing the press conference after the meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao said that
At present in Chhattisgarh, different personal laws are applicable according to different religions in disputes related to marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, maintenance and family matters. Under Article 44 of the Indian Constitution, the State is directed to enforce a Uniform Civil Code for all citizens. Due to different laws, there is disparity in the legal process, which complicates the justice process. In such a situation, it is considered necessary to implement UCC to make the law simple, uniform and equitable, which will also promote religious and gender equality.
