Women’s reservation and delimitation will change the political equation in Uttarakhand.

Uttarakhand News: A major political change can be seen in the politics of Uttarakhand regarding the Nari Shakti Vandan Act giving 33 percent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and the State Assembly and possible delimitation. Due to these two issues, political turmoil has intensified in the state and rhetoric has increased between all the major parties.

Nari Shakti Vandan Act

During his recent visit to Dehradun, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed for cooperation from the opposition in support of the Nari Shakti Vandan Act and asked to avoid political confrontation. After this, BJP has also sought support from Congress on this issue.

Possibility of further political conflict

The opposition says that the central government is pushing this Act and delimitation for political gains. Congress alleges that there could be an election strategy behind calling the special session. In view of the upcoming assembly elections, political conflict on this issue is likely to increase further.

Assembly seats may decrease

Under the proposed system, there may be a major change in the structure of the Assembly after women get 33 percent reservation. Along with this, once the delimitation is implemented, redistribution of seats on the basis of population is also considered certain.
It is believed that due to migration and low population in the hilly areas, the assembly seats may decrease, while the number of seats may increase in the plain districts like Haridwar, Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital.

Political balance can change completely

At present there are 70 seats in the Uttarakhand Assembly, in which the hilly areas are considered dominant. After delimitation, this number may increase to more than 100, due to which the political balance may completely change. However, the possibility of implementation of both these systems in the next assembly elections is said to be low, but after calling a special session by the Central Government, concern and debate has intensified among the opposition parties.

Congress accused of spreading confusion

BJP State President Mahendra Bhatt said that Congress has already supported the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, hence it should not back down from its stand. He accused Congress of spreading confusion regarding delimitation.

Mountainous areas will be harmed

On the other hand, Congress State President Ganesh Godiyal said that BJP is making political use of this issue. He says that 33 percent reservation for women should be applicable only on the existing 70 seats and the basis of delimitation should not be population, because it will harm the hilly areas. Congress has warned that if this happens, it will take the issue to the public.
