Infrastructure improvement, streamlined security processes and cutting-edge passenger services have taken Hong Kong International Airport to the global forefront, even ahead of long-dominant Singapore Changi, insiders said.

Hong Kong was named the world’s best airport based on votes from 2.5 million travelers in more than 150 countries at the Global Travel Awards this month by the U.K.’s International Media & News Group.

The result surprised many in the aviation industry since Changi Airport monopolized the top spot for decades.

“We are truly honored to receive the best airport awards across such a wide range of areas, which reflect the dedication and collective efforts of the entire Hong Kong International Airport community,” Vivian Cheung Kar-fay, Airport Authority Hong Kong CEO, told the South China Morning Post.

Hong Kong International Airport’s win marks a turning point, reflecting years of heavy investment in modernization and innovation aimed at elevating its global standing, according to Travel and Tour World.

The airport has focused on the passenger experience, supported by user-friendly technologies such as self-check-in kiosks and integrated mobile app services, The Standard newspaper reported.

Its second terminal, set to fully open in May, is expected to handle 15 million passengers by the end of the year, with a medium-term target of increasing the capacity to 30 million.

The redeveloped terminal is tailored for budget and regional carriers, featuring advanced smart check-in, self-service baggage handling and streamlined security systems.

To further enhance its appeal, the airport has introduced a free city tour for transit passengers with layovers longer than seven hours. They can join a four-hour tour highlighting Hong Kong’s cultural and scenic attractions.

Insiders said Changi has faced increased competition from other global airports.

Last year some tourists said immigration clearance at Changi was swift but luggage delivery at the airport was too slow.

Many claimed they were left waiting for their bags for 45 minutes.

The airport operator then issued an apology and pledged to ensure a smooth experience for all travelers.
