Sugar Production India is the largest sugar producing country in the world and India’s share in global production is 16-18%. Due to the sugar industry in the country, the rural economy is also strengthened and lakhs of farmers and workers are benefited. In the sugar season of last year 2025-26 too, huge increase in sugar production has been recorded in India. According to the information given by the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories, the total sugar production in the country has increased by 7.70 percent to 27.39 million tonnes. This growth is considered positive for the country’s agriculture and sugar industries.
The states of Maharashtra and Karnataka in particular have taken a major share in this growth. Maharashtra has taken a big lead in sugar production in the country this year. Sugar production in Maharashtra was 8.06 million tonnes last year. But this year it has increased by 23 percent to 9.92 million tons. Satisfactory rainfall, increase in sugarcane cultivation and improved production processes are considered to be the major reasons for this growth. Karnataka has also seen a good increase in sugar production. Production here has increased by 16.70 percent to 4.71 million tonnes. This growth has been possible due to the efficiency of sugar mills in the state and stability in sugarcane production.
On the other hand, there has been a slight decline in production in Uttar Pradesh. Sugar production here has declined by about 2 percent to 8.92 million tonnes. But this decline is not very big and it has not affected the total production of the country.
In this season, the sugar rate has been fixed. Compared to last year, this rate has increased to 9.55 percent. The increase in extraction rates has also resulted in more sugar from less sugarcane, thus helping to increase overall production. Production for the current season has already crossed the 2024-25 figure of 26.2 million tonnes. Therefore, this season is seen to be more successful for the sugar industry. A total of 541 sugar factories were operating across the country. Out of which, currently only 21 factories are running and the remaining factories are closed due to the end of the season.
Meanwhile, the increase in sugar production is directly benefiting the farmers and the industrial sector. Due to this, the sugarcane farmers are likely to get good price. The economic condition of sugar mills is expected to improve and the rural economy may also get a boost as there is an opportunity to increase exports.
According to experts, if the climate remains favorable and the same pace of production continues, India’s sugar industry could grow stronger in the next few years. Also, exports are likely to increase along with domestic demand.
