Chandra Shekhar’s birth centenary events announced by Neeraj Shekhar
Neeraj Shekhar, son of former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar and BJP Member of Parliament, announced on Friday that nationwide events will be organized to mark the birth centenary of his father. The commemorations will begin with tributes at Chandra Shekhar’s memorial in New Delhi.
Speaking to reporters, Neeraj Shekhar stated, “His centenary year is beginning. I invited everyone to his memorial in Delhi, including my colleagues in Parliament and the Vice President of this country, to pay tribute to my father. Many of his admirers are here today, too. We have decided to organize events across the country to commemorate his birth centenary. Today marks the beginning of that.”
On the Women’s Reservation Bill, Neeraj Shekhar added, “… This is their right. This is not a favour… I am hopeful it will be passed in the Lok Sabha today.”
Chandra Shekhar was born on April 17, 1927, and served as India’s eighth prime minister from November 1990 to June 1991. He led a government formed by a faction of the Janata Dal with outside support from the Congress party.
Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the former prime minister on his birth anniversary, describing this year as the start of Chandra Shekhar’s centenary year. PM Modi called the occasion a moment to reaffirm the commitment to building a prosperous and just India in accordance with Chandra Shekhar’s vision.
He characterized the late leader as a mass leader known for his courage, strong convictions, and deep respect for democratic values. PM Modi recalled his personal interactions with Chandra Shekhar and urged young Indians to learn more about the former prime minister’s contributions.
