Ajinkya Rahane-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are in a perilous position after winning none of their six matches in IPL 2026. Having crashed to their fifth defeat at the hands of the Gujarat Titans on Friday at the Narendra Modi Stadium, it begs the question whether the three-time champions can qualify for the playoffs.
Can Kolkata Knight Riders qualify for IPL 2026 playoffs?
The Knight Riders began their stint with a six-wicket defeat to the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, followed by a 65-run battering at the hands of the SunRisers Hyderabad in their own backyard. The washout against the Punjab Kings at the Eden Gardens earned them one point but it followed losses to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Chennai Super Kings and the Gujarat Titans. Hence, they are yet to win a game, suffering five defeats in six games. With only one point in KKR’s kitty, they need to win almost all of their remaining eight games to reach 17 points.
Another defeat or washout could make their qualification almost impossible. Since their net run-rate also stands at -1.149, the Knight Riders must ensure to win their games by good margins. While Kolkata are mathematically in the hunt for a playoff spot, the likes of Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and the Rajasthan Royals could make their path incredibly difficult.
“There was slight dew as well, but no excuses” – Ajinkya Rahane
Reflecting on the Knight Riders’ defeat, Rahane said:
“The way we started with two or three wickets down, the way Green started was amazing. From 147 for 4 to 180 was slightly difficult. But credit to all our bowlers (for) the way they bowled. They took it to the last over. Gill batted really well. There was slight dew as well, but no excuses.”
When asked what is the way forward for the Knight Riders, the 37-year-old suggested that they intend to be positive moving forward too.
“It’s all about being in the moment. When things are not going your way, you think too many things.”
Kolkata will next face the Royals on April 19, Sunday.
