Cabinet led by CM Mann gives green signal to remove silt from rivers, ponds and drains
The Punjab Cabinet under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has approved the public-friendly policy. Under this, land owners have been allowed to remove silt from rivers, streams and drains at their own cost. Under this policy, the right to use the material extracted from rivers, streams and drains has also been given free of cost. Its objective is to speed up flood preparations before the monsoon and improve the flow of rivers in important parts.
What did the Chief Minister’s office say?
Disclosing this, the Chief Minister’s Office said, “The Punjab Cabinet under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has taken a big public-friendly decision to give permission to land owners for cleaning of rivers/chaos/sem drains including Sutlej, Beas and Siswan rivers. This decision was taken in the meeting of the Council of Ministers chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.
Land owners have been allowed to clean rivers, streams and drains at their own cost and use the excavated material free of cost.
The Cabinet has approved the policy to allow the concerned land owners to desilt the rivers/channels/drains including Sutlej, Beas and Siswan and use the excavated material free of cost at their own cost. The spokesperson further said that this initiative will help in rapid desilting of critical places, increase the flow capacity of rivers/channels and reduce the risk of floods, thereby protecting public and private property.
The Punjab government has identified 9 important places where desilting is required to ensure smooth flow of water in view of the upcoming monsoon season. If the process of desilting is not started at these places, it may lead to accumulation of silt, reduce the flow capacity of rivers/rivers and increase the risk of floods during the coming monsoon. Apart from this, the excavated material cannot be continued to be used.
To ensure timely desilting before the monsoon season 2026-27 and to resolve sensitive areas, it has been decided to allow the concerned land owners to carry out desilting at their own cost with free use of the excavated material for their own use. This will help in faster completion of desilting works while reducing potential flood risks and associated liabilities.
