A significant alternative to LPG

An important alternative to LPG is now available with the initiative of the Government of India and some private companies. ‘Ethanol cooking stoves’ are being introduced in the market. This is likely to reduce the cost of cooking by half.

The government is thinking seriously

Fluctuations in LPG prices in India and disruptions in its supply are often a constant headache for hotels, restaurants and large organizations. But, efforts to find an indigenous and sustainable solution to this crisis have now gained momentum. According to a report by ‘Bussiness’, the government is now seriously considering the use of ethanol for commercial cooking purposes.

If this initiative materialises, the dependence of commercial kitchens on LPG cylinders can be significantly reduced in the near future. Additional ethanol capacity of about 1,000 crore liters is planned to be used for cooking purposes. A detailed ‘white paper’ on the subject is expected to be presented to an inter-ministerial committee in the coming weeks.

Ethanol is cheaper than LPG

Ethanol especially ‘hydrous ethanol’ can be more economical than commercial LPG. It usually consists of 95% ethanol and a small amount of water. As a result, it does not need to undergo a dehydration process; Which helps to keep the cost down. Commercial LPG is generally priced at ₹103 per kg, while hydrous ethanol costs around ₹70 per kg. But the ‘calorific value’ or energy capacity of ethanol is lower than that of LPG. This means that more ethanol is needed when using it. So it is widely used.

What is ethanol made from?

In India, ethanol is mainly produced from sugarcane, maize and broken rice. It is used as ‘biofuel’. Currently, ethanol-blended petrol is sold across India. Ethanol used for cooking purposes is different and cheaper than ethanol used as a fuel additive.

What exactly is the government’s plan?

According to a source, the government’s primary plan is to promote the use of ethanol for cooking in commercial establishments like hotels, airports and restaurants. The conflict between the US and Iran has disrupted LPG imports, reducing the availability of LPG in the domestic market. Oil marketing companies are prioritizing domestic needs; As a result, the supply of LPG to commercial establishments like hotels and restaurants has been restricted.

A proposal on the use of ethanol for commercial cooking will be presented to an inter-ministerial committee. The committee includes officials from the Ministries of Petroleum, Road Transport, Heavy Industries and Food. It is the committee that takes policy decisions related to ethanol. According to sources, industry representatives are ready to start trials and cooperate with the government to develop safety and technical standards. A detailed proposal for this initiative is currently being prepared.
