‘Some dictators abuse religion for military or political gain’, Pope Leo
Pope Leo XIV, who reached Cameroon, termed dictatorship as dangerous for the world. Pope Leo XIV made this statement in the Cameroonian city of Bamenda. Pope Leo expressed his hope that peace will prevail in the world. At the same time, he condemned those who “misuse religion and the name of God for their military, economic and political gains, and push what is sacred into darkness and filth.”
According to Vatican News, Pope Leo said that those who promote war refuse to accept that destruction takes a moment, but it also takes a lifetime to rebuild it.
“Some dictators” refuse to accept that “it only takes a moment to destroy, but a lifetime is not enough to rebuild everything,” the supreme leader of the Catholic Church said. The Pope lamented how those in power spend billions of dollars on murder and destruction, “yet the resources needed for treatment, education and recovery are nowhere to be found.”
He further said that people use Africa’s resources to buy weapons, “perpetuating a never-ending cycle of instability and death.”
The Pope was saying these things regarding the ethnic conflict in Cameroon. But these days, US President Donald Trump’s comments on the supreme leader of the Catholic Church have also been in discussion.
The foundation of the recent controversy was laid around Easter, when President Trump started making his threats regarding Iran. In response Pope Leo said in his ‘Palm Sunday’ message that God rejects the prayers of those who wage war.
Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance began openly criticizing the Pope’s comments. On Sunday, Trump called the Pope weak on his social media platform ‘Truth Social’. Vice President JD Vance, who converted to Catholicism, also said Pope Leo should be careful when speaking about theology.
