Women’s Reservation Act 2023 came into force at midnight amid debate in Parliament

Bureau Prayagraj. There was a vigorous debate till late night in the country’s Parliament on issues related to women’s reservation and delimitation. Meanwhile, the Women’s Reservation Act-2023, which gives 33 percent reservation to women in Parliament and State Assemblies, has been implemented from Thursday. The Union Law Ministry has issued an official notification in this regard.

Despite the implementation of the Act, women in the current Lok Sabha will not get its benefits immediately. According to officials, the reservation system for women will be effective only after the delimitation process based on the next census is completed. The notification of the Union Law Ministry states that the provisions of the Constitution (106th Amendment) Act, 2023 will be considered effective from April 16, 2026.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh, while giving his reaction on the Women’s Reservation Act, said that this is absolutely strange. The ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Act’ passed in September 2023 has come into force from today, while the amendments to be made in it are still being debated and will be voted on. I am completely surprised.

In September 2023, Parliament passed the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Act’, under which a provision has been made to reserve one-third of the seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women. However, it was already made clear in the law that this reservation can be implemented only after the delimitation process to be conducted after the 2027 census is completed. The purpose of the three bills currently being discussed in the Lok Sabha is to pave the way for implementing this reservation from the year 2029.
