Just now: As soon as Hormuz was closed again, Iran attacked the tanker, fired heavily, read full update.
Tehran. Iran once again announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday. As soon as this was announced, Iran attacked a tanker passing through Hormuz and fired heavily. Iran has again closed Hormuz and halted movement following the US blockade. The British military said on Saturday that two gunboats of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard fired on a tanker passing through Hormuz.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Center said the tanker and its crew were reported safe, but did not provide the identity of the vessel or its destination. Iran had earlier announced it was reimposing sanctions on the strait in response to US sanctions on Iranian shipping and ports. Iran has blocked ships from passing through the strait during the seven-week war, except for those that it itself allows.
The tanker’s captain said two gunboats of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps came close to his tanker, 37 kilometers (23 miles) north-east of Oman. Without any radio warning, those gunboats opened fire on the tanker, the UK Maritime Trade Operations Center said in an online statement. Earlier, Iran has reversed its decision to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and re-imposed restrictions on this vital waterway. This decision has come a day after US President Donald Trump’s statement in which he had said that he will continue his naval blockade on this waterway with full force.
Iran’s military command said in a statement that Washington had broken its promise by continuing the naval blockade of ships passing through Iranian ports. “The situation in Hormuz will remain under strict control until the United States restores freedom of movement for all ships coming to Iran,” the statement said. Tehran said on Friday that Hormuz had been opened after the ceasefire in Lebanon. This ceasefire stopped Israel’s war with Hezbollah.
