What did the opposition say?

  • TMC MP Derek O’Brien targeted the Prime Minister and said that women were insulted when an attempt was made to link women’s reservation with the Delimitation Bill. While she was used as a pawn, Mahua Moitra termed PM Modi’s address as ‘dramabaazi’ and said that the Women’s Reservation Bill has already been passed in 2023 and the government can implement it immediately if it wants. G
  • Congress Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari said that the Prime Minister’s address shows disappointment. He alleged that if the government’s intentions were clear, the bill passed in 2023 would have been implemented immediately and not postponed till 2029 or 2027 elections.
  • Another Congress MP Mallu Ravi said that linking women’s reservation with delimitation became the reason for the controversy. He alleged that many parties opposed it due to the fear of it affecting the seats of South India. I never expected such a speech from the PM of India. Today we have a limited number of seats, but after the 50% increase, the number of seats will increase more from North India than from South India.
  • Mallu Ravi said that it was the Congress which had introduced the Women’s Reservation Bill and got it passed in the Rajya Sabha long ago… In 2023, the same bill was passed unanimously in the Lok Sabha… If they had put forward the same bill to be passed as a law, we would have passed it unanimously. He hasn’t presented it that way. They know that they do not have two-thirds majority for this constitutional amendment. They wanted to bring the bill, get it failed, and then go to the people and say that Congress, DMK, TMC and SP have failed it.
  • Congress MP Renuka Chaudhary said that today the Prime Minister spoke not as the head of the government, but as a campaigner. On national television he repeatedly named parties and attacked Congress, but hardly said anything about women. The Women’s Reservation Bill was already passed in 2023—if there is real respect and commitment, then implement it in the current Lok Sabha now. Instead of drama and repeating things, the public wants answers.
  • DMK MP Kalanidhi Veeraswamy said that women’s reservation and delimitation should have been brought separately. He alleged that the concerns of the southern states were ignored.
  • AIMIM leader Waris Pathan said that BJP’s time is over. If they really cared about the Women’s Reservation Bill, they would have implemented it in 2023 itself. Why was this bill brought only at the time of elections? After all, what was the matter of such hurry?
