Assam Flood Preparedness Exercise: The Indian Army is preparing to deal with disasters like floods in Assam. Keeping the floods in mind, the Red Horns Division (Gajraj Corps) of the Indian Army on Saturday organized a large-scale joint relief exercise ‘Exercise Jal Rahat’ at IIT Guwahati.

Apart from the Indian Army, several agencies including National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) participated in the exercise. Coordinated and united efforts to deal with natural disasters were demonstrated during the exercise.

During the exercise, demonstrations like deep water rescue operations, safe evacuation of stranded people and use of modern technologies like drones were carried out keeping in mind the flood-like conditions. The teams practiced rescuing people trapped in floods and providing immediate assistance to the affected.

Giving information about this joint exercise, officials said that the objective of this exercise is to ensure better preparedness and quick response in case of frequent floods in Assam and North-East. It also stressed the importance of coordination and swift action between agencies through joint exercises.

Lieutenant General Neeraj Shukla, General Officer Commanding, Gajraj Corps, supervised this joint exercise. He called for ‘participation of the entire society’ in disaster management. Emphasizing the need to ‘anticipate, prepare, protect and provision’ Called for adopting the principles of. He also said that public participation is very important for effective disaster management and enhancing resilience. The exercise also aims to increase the confidence of the general public in the preparedness of the security forces and disaster relief agencies.

School-college students watched the demonstration

Senior Army officers, representatives of state administration, officers of Central Armed Police Forces and disaster management organizations were present during the programme. The event was witnessed by around 800 people, which included NCC and NSS cadets along with students from schools and colleges of Guwahati.

Officials said all agencies involved in the exercise have pledged to conduct regular joint exercises in the future, update standard operating procedures and invest in capacity building to further strengthen the emergency response system.
