Fear is a game of power and dominance, Ram Gopal Varma told how the underworld targeted the stars.

New Delhi . The 1990s has been a period in the history of Hindi cinema when the film industry was not limited to just creativity and stardom but the dark shadow of the underworld was also looming over it. Remembering this period, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has made many shocking revelations. He told that at that time the underworld of Mumbai was not limited to just earning money but it was also the film industry. To establish dominance

Ram Gopal Varma, in a conversation with writer Hussain Zaidi, said that every action of the underworld was part of a well-planned strategy. Gangsters used to create an atmosphere of fear in the industry by targeting big and influential names so that others would automatically come under their pressure. Giving an example, he said that targeting big names like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Rakesh Roshan was part of this strategy.

According to him, the objective of the underworld was not only extortion but also to gain power and control. When a big star or filmmaker refused to obey them, an attempt was made to make him an example so that others would get scared. This fear became their biggest strength.

In the same context, he mentioned the attack on Rakesh Roshan in the year 2000. This attack took place immediately after the tremendous success of the film Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai. It is said that the underworld wanted control over the dates and functioning of the film and when it was opposed, an incident of firing took place outside his office on 21 January 2000, although luckily he survived the attack.

Ram Gopal Varma also expressed his opinion regarding the murder of Gulshan Kumar in 1997. He said that the growing popularity and influence of Gulshan Kumar had made him the target of the underworld. According to him, this incident might have been a means for criminals like Abu Salem to establish their power and identity.

  • He also indicated that Gulshan Kumar had allegedly refused to bow down to the extortion demands and this could have been a major reason for the conspiracy against him. In those times, anyone who did not bow down to the pressure had to be prepared to face the consequences.

This entire incident exposes a bitter truth of Bollywood at that time when the film industry was not only a medium of entertainment but was also facing the influence of the crime world. These revelations of Ram Gopal Varma not only bring out the horrors of that period but also show how an attempt was made to influence an entire industry through fear and pressure.
