SRH vs CSK: Abhishek Sharma did something today that Warner, Dhawan and Bairstow never managed for Hyderabad

David Warner spent six seasons at Sunrisers Hyderabad and became the greatest batsman in the franchise’s history. He scored 4014 runs for them, won them their only IPL title in 2016 and defined what batting for SRH looked like for the better part of a decade. His fastest fifty for the franchise took 20 balls.

Shikhar Dhawan was the anchor who gave SRH stability at the top for years. His fastest fifty for the orange army took longer than that. Jonny Bairstow arrived in 2019 and felt explosive at the time. His most destructive powerplay start for SRH was a 26-ball fifty.

These were the speed kings of their era. Abhishek Sharma scored his fifty today against Chennai Super Kings in 15 balls and the record books needed updating again.

SRH vs CSK: Warner couldn’t and nobody else could either until Abhishek Sharma broke his own record

The fastest fifty in Sunrisers Hyderbad IPL history before today belonged to Abhishek Sharma. He had scored a 16-ball fifty against Mumbai Indians at Hyderabad in 2024 and that record sat at the top of the list. Travis Head matched that 16-ball mark on two separate occasions the same season against DC and LSG.

David Warner’s 20-ball fifty against CSK in 2015 which had stood as the franchise benchmark for years was already off the podium by the time 2024 ended. Today Abhishek moved the marker again. Fifteen balls. Six fours and four sixes. A strike rate of 333 in the first six overs. Warner at his most destructive operated at 140 to 150.

Abhishek today was operating at 268 by the time he crossed 50. The same franchise, the same orange jersey, a completely different category of aggression.

He finished with 59 off 22 balls before being dismissed. That innings took him past 2000 IPL runs, 2004 from 83 games at an average of 27 plus and a strike rate of 167.55. He also became the first player in IPL history to score six fifties in under 20 balls.

The first five came across previous seasons making him the only player ever to reach that mark. The sixth arrived today off the 15th ball he faced against CSK’s attack at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Where Abhishek Shamra stands in SRH history and what the numbers say

Among batsmen who have represented SRH in the IPL only Warner with 4014 runs, Dhawan with 2518 and Kane Williamson with 2101 have scored more for the franchise than Abhishek’s 1941 runs in SRH colours. He is fourth on that list and closing.

Warner and Abhishek are also the only two batters in SRH history to hit more than 100 sixes for the franchise with Warner on 143 and Abhishek on 113. Across all T20 cricket Abhishek has now scored 5429 runs from 187 matches at an average of 32.5 with 34 fifties and eight centuries. He has hit 341 T20 sixes and is closing in on 350.

The era of Warner defining the SRH top order lasted from 2014 to 2021. The era of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head redefining it started in 2024 and the record list for fastest SRH fifties now looks completely different from how it looked two years ago.

Warner’s 20-ball record stood for nine years. Abhishek broke it in 2024 with 16 balls and then broke his own record today with 15. The question is not whether he will break it again. The question is how many balls he will need next time.
