Virudhunagar (Tamil Nadu), April 19. The number of dead workers has reached 23 in a massive explosion at a firecracker factory in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday. Six other workers are seriously injured. The injured are undergoing treatment at Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital. The death toll is expected to increase further.
According to the information received, the explosion took place in the afternoon in a private firecracker manufacturing unit in Kattanarpatti of Virudhunagar district. The sound of the explosion was heard for about 10 kilometers. After receiving information about the incident, fire and rescue service personnel reached the spot and after hours of effort the fire could be extinguished. Due to the massive explosion, some parts of the building also collapsed.
30 laborers were working at the time of the accident
Officials said that more than 30 laborers worked in more than 10 different rooms in this factory, which was running after approval from the district administration. Today being a holiday, it seems that the work of making crackers and handling raw materials was going on in the front verandah of the factory premises. It is suspected that the fire broke out suddenly due to rubbing between the raw materials. Within seconds, the fire engulfed the entire factory, causing a huge explosion.
