I-PAC was not closed, only major changes were made in its operations in Bengal.
Amid the election environment, the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) has made major changes in its operations in West Bengal. The move comes at a time when Trinamool Congress (TMC) has termed reports of I-PAC shutting down operations in the state as “completely baseless”.
According to sources, I-PAC has suspended its field-level activities in the state for the time being, while many teams have been shifted to work-from-home (WFH) mode. This change comes after the recent action by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), including the arrest of I-PAC director Vinesh Chandel and continuous questioning of the top leadership.
According to the information, on April 18, the I-PAC leadership instructed its employees to make changes in operational activities citing legal reasons. Employees were asked to limit external communication and avoid using official email IDs. Additionally, WhatsApp groups used for media coordination have also seen a sudden silence, which is considered unusual during election time.
TMC initially rejected these reports outright, but later party leaders gave a relatively balanced response. Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien said, “We are the second largest opposition party in Parliament with 40 MPs. We work with many agencies and everything is normal. We will not jeopardize the career of any young professional.”
The party also alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Center is trying to weaken its election campaign through agencies. Voting in West Bengal is to be held in two phases on April 23 and 29, while the counting of votes will take place on May 4. In such a situation, this change in the operations of I-PAC is politically important.
However, I-PAC has not completely ceased its operations. Campaign related activities are going on for TMC and there is coordination between the two parties. It is not unusual for political consultancy firms to adjust their resources and teams according to the election cycle. But in the current circumstances, legal pressure and recent events have made this change even more important.
