Hero of India’s first T20I win, but never got a chance in IPL

When did India play the first T20I?

T20 cricket started in India in 2006, when Team India played its first international match against South Africa under the captaincy of Virender Sehwag. All-rounder Dinesh Mongia was also a part of the Indian team in this match. After this, in the year 2007, T20 World Cup was played in India itself. After Team India won the World Cup, the popularity of this format increased further, which IPL took to new heights.

Why did Dinesh Mongia not get a chance?

Dinesh Mongia played T20 International cricket for India, but he never got a chance to play in IPL. Mongia played India’s first T20 International match against South Africa on 1 December 2006 in Johannesburg. In that match, he scored 38 runs on 45 balls and contributed significantly to the team’s victory. This was his first and last T20 match.

Even today, this question arises among cricket fans that why such an experienced player did not get a chance in IPL. The biggest reason for this is said to be his playing in the Indian Cricket League (ICL). BCCI had banned him because of his involvement in ICL. Although many players got amnesty in 2008, Mongia could not get it.

Great record in ODI

Even though Dinesh Mongia has never been able to play IPL in his career, but before that he had an amazing performance in ODIs. Dinesh played 57 ODI matches for the Indian team, in which he scored 1230 runs while batting. During this period, he scored 1 century and 4 half-centuries.

His best innings in ODI came against Zimbabwe in 2002. When he batted brilliantly and played an unbeaten inning of 159 runs. Apart from this, if we talk about his bowling in ODIs, he also took 14 wickets. Dinesh Mongia made his ODI debut on 28 March 2001. He played his first ODI match against Australia. On May 12, 2007, Dinesh played his last ODI match against Bangladesh.

How was your first class career?

Dinesh Mongia had performed amazingly in domestic cricket also. He played 121 first class matches. During this period, Dinesh had scored 8028 runs while batting. In which he scored 27 centuries and 28 half-centuries. His best innings in first class was 308 runs not out. Apart from this, he had taken 46 wickets while bowling.

How was your List-A career?

If we talk about his List-A cricket career, he played 198 matches, in which Dinesh scored 5535 runs while batting. His best inning in the list was 159 runs unbeaten and he took 116 wickets while bowling.

How did your career end?

According to reports, Mongia was also affected by some disciplinary issues, due to which his cricket career gradually went out of the mainstream. Mongia’s career, once considered India’s reliable all-rounder, stopped at a point from where comeback became almost impossible.

How did IPL expand the scope of T20?

Till date, 119 players have played in T20 International cricket from India, while the number of Indian and foreign players playing in IPL has exceeded 1000. This figure shows how big an impact the league has made in the world of cricket.

While legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid played T20 cricket for India and became a part of IPL, legends like Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Anil Kumble did not play T20 International for India, but later appeared in IPL.
