Amidst the security crisis, Iran’s participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026 is still in doubt, the government will take the final decision…

Uncertainty continues regarding Iran’s participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026. The country’s Sports Minister Ahmed Donyamali has clarified that the final decision will be taken in view of the ongoing tension between America and Iran and the changing political-security situation.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, he said that a special committee has been formed on this subject and continuous meetings are going on. He said, “We are fulfilling our legal responsibilities, but considering the situation, at any time it can be decided that the team should not go. If the decision is taken to go, then we will have to register a strong presence with full preparation.”

Iran has already qualified for the mega 48-team tournament and has been placed in Group G along with Belgium, New Zealand and Egypt. Competitors are proposed in Los Angeles and Seattle.

However, political tensions between the US and Iran have raised security concerns. This issue has become more sensitive after the comments of some former American leaders. Meanwhile, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has supported Iran’s participation and met the team and praised their efforts.

The Iran Football Federation has also indicated that it is in talks with FIFA about shifting the matches to Mexico if security guarantees are not met adequately.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest edition in history, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches. Its inaugural match will be played in Mexico City and the final in New Jersey.
