Indian Navy On Alert Amid Irgc Threats Instructs To Stay Away From Larak Island
Amidst the increasing tension in West Asia, the Indian Navy has taken important steps regarding the security of Indian ships. The Navy has instructed all Indian-flagged ships to stay away from Larak Island following the incident of firing on two Indian ships by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on April 18.
According to defense sources, Indian cargo ships present in the Persian Gulf have been asked to proceed only after receiving instructions from the Navy. This step has been taken to ensure security in a sensitive sea route like the Strait of Hormuz.
Larak Island is an important center of Iran’s oil export and monitoring system. The area is under the control of the IRGC and advanced radars, bunkers and electronic warfare systems are deployed here. Additionally, fast attack boats equipped with anti-ship missiles can also be deployed from here, which pose a threat to passing ships.
The Indian Navy has deployed about half a dozen warships near the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz. This deployment has been done under Operation Sankalp, which aims to ensure the security of energy tankers visiting India.
According to reports, several Indian-bound tankers are still stranded in the area. These include ships carrying crude oil, LPG and LNG. The Navy is in constant touch with these ships and they have been advised to proceed only when safe passage is found.

On 18 April, Indian ships Sanmar Herald and Jag Arnav were fired upon by Iran’s Sepah Navy. Both ships had to turn back near Larak Island. However, no Indian crew member was injured in this incident.
The Ministry of External Affairs has said that India is in touch with Iran and other concerned countries to ensure safe movement of Indian ships. Iran has also assured that Indian concerns will be conveyed to Tehran.
According to government officials, so far 10 Indian ships have safely transited the Strait of Hormuz. The tanker named Desh Garima has made the crossing safely on April 18 and is currently under naval surveillance in the Arabian Sea. It is expected to reach Mumbai on 22nd April. Amidst the increasing tension, this activism of the Indian Navy is being seen as an effort to safeguard India’s interests and energy security on global trade routes.
