Madam Bo rewards Laos U17 following shocking victory over Thailand

The Laos U17 team were awarded a bonus from businesswoman Pijika Bunkwang, widely known as Madam Bo, after creating a surprise at the 2026 ASEAN U17 Championship by defeating Thailand 3-2 to top the group.

The victory on April 18 secured first place in Group B for the young Laos squad, who earned seven points after three matches, and eliminated Thailand from the tournament.

For the first time in over a decade, the team have entered the semifinals of the tournament, a feat last accomplished back in 2015.

Laos defeating a regional powerhouse like Thailand was widely considered the biggest shock of the tournament so far, creating a massive wave of celebration across regional media and social networks.

Moments after the match concluded, Bunkwang took to social media and announced a bonus of 50 million kip (US$2,270) to honor the team’s fighting spirit and historic victory.

Bunkwang, who runs a corporate empire spanning real estate, construction, commercial leasing and golf course management, is a highly influential figure in Laotian football.

She is currently the president of local club Vientiane United.

During the 31st SEA Games held in Vietnam, she accompanied and financially supported the youth teams of Laos.

Fans and regional media frequently compare her dedication to that of Thailand football president Madam Pang, as both highly influential women frequently inspire their national teams.
