Tension increases in Hormuz: Iran attacks three cargo ships and seizes two

New Delhi, 22 April. Since US President Donald Trump extended the ceasefire deadline, three cargo ships have been attacked in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday and Iran has seized two. According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations Center (UKMTO), the ship was first fired upon by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

According to Iranian media, the IRGC targeted all three ships targeted in the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC-affiliated Fars News Agency says the ship ‘Euphoria’ was targeted and is now near the coast of Iran.

IRGC Navy said – were operating without necessary permits

The IRGC’s navy says cargo ships MSC Francesca and Epaminondas were captured and diverted to Iran’s coast. The Navy says that the ships were operating without the necessary permits and were tampering with the navigation system.

Trump had announced to extend the ceasefire on Tuesday

Earlier on Tuesday night, Trump had said that he was extending the ceasefire indefinitely. Also, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is being continued by America, the purpose of which is to put pressure on Iran before the talks with America in Pakistan.

Status of talks not clear yet

But the status of talks is not clear yet. US Vice President JD Vance did not leave for Pakistan on Tuesday as scheduled while Iran has not yet given an official reaction to Trump’s statement.

There is no point in extending the ceasefire – Iran

An adviser to Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Baghar Ghalibaf said there was no point in extending the ceasefire and called it a ploy to buy time for a surprise attack. Mahdi Mohammadi wrote on social media platform X, ‘The losing party cannot decide the terms. Continuing the siege is no different from bombing and will have to be responded to with military action. Trump has extended the ceasefire so that he can prepare for a sudden attack. Now the time has come for Iran to take the initiative.
