Big upheaval in Nepal’s politics: Resignation of Home Minister Sudan Gurung, increased turmoil in the new government

But within a few days of the formation of the government, differences and controversies started coming to the fore. The biggest shock in this series came when the country’s Home Minister Sudan Gurung Resigned from his post. On Wednesday he suddenly announced his resignation.

Why did Gurung resign?

Questions were raised on many forums including social media regarding Sudan Gurung’s personal wealth and financial condition. Taking these allegations seriously, he himself accepted moral responsibility and decided to step down.

In his Facebook post, he wrote that decorum and purity are most important in public life.

Gurung said-

“I am resigning from my post in view of public criticism. The trust of the people is more important than power.”

“The Gen-G movement was for transparency, so it applies to us too”

Gurung acknowledged that if the Gen-Ji movement was for transparency, honesty and better governance, the same principles are equally important for him.

He said-

He also said that with his resignation, questions will be raised on the government and conflict of interest will end.

Demand for clean investigation

Sudan Gurung also demanded a transparent and impartial investigation into his financial holdings.

He appealed to the youth and media to give top priority to purity and respect in life.
