Prakash Raj faces complaints over Ramayana remarks

Hyderabad: Actor Prakash Raj is facing legal complaints after allegations surfaced that his remarks on the Ramayana were defamatory and hurt religious sentiments.

The complaint was filed by Bhanu Prakash, a board member of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams and a BJP leader from Andhra Pradesh. He accused the actor of making statements that allegedly distorted the Ramayana and disrespected Hindu beliefs.

Complaint alleges offensive remarks

According to reports, Bhanu Prakash urged authorities to initiate legal proceedings not only against Prakash Raj but also against those who may have supported or encouraged the remarks.

He further claimed that such statements could disturb communal harmony and called for strict action.

Remarks at literature festival

The controversy stems from an appearance by Prakash Raj at the Kerala Literature Festival held in January.

During a session, the actor reportedly spoke about a children’s theatre performance that reimagined characters from the Ramayana—such as Rama, Lakshmana, Ravana and Shurpanakha—in a modern, satirical context.

The performance allegedly included references to contemporary elements like fruits, payments and GST, presented as part of its humour.

Viral clips trigger backlash

Clips from the actor’s narration later surfaced online and went viral, drawing criticism from sections of social media users who found the content objectionable.

The issue gained further traction as debates intensified over artistic expression and religious sensitivity.

Separate legal complaint filed

The matter escalated earlier this month when Amita Sachdeva filed a separate complaint on April 16.

Describing herself as a devout Hindu, she alleged that the remarks were deliberate and offensive, stating that her religious sentiments had been deeply hurt. She also emphasised that insults to Hindu deities and Sanatan Dharma should not be tolerated.

Authorities reviewing complaints

Officials have confirmed that the complaints are under review. Legal experts suggest that authorities will examine whether the remarks fall under provisions related to hurting religious sentiments or promoting disharmony.

No response from actor yet

As of now, Prakash Raj has not issued any public response to the allegations or the complaints filed against him.

Conclusion

The controversy highlights the ongoing tension between freedom of expression and religious sensitivities in public discourse. As authorities examine the complaints, the case may further spark debate on the limits of satire and artistic interpretation in a diverse society like India.
