Voting begins on 152 seats in West Bengal and 234 seats in Tamil Nadu.
Delhi: Voting is taking place today on 152 assembly seats of West Bengal and 234 assembly seats of Tamil Nadu. Assembly elections are to be held in Bengal in two phases and in the first phase voting is being held on 152 seats. At the same time, voting is to be held in one phase on all the seats in Tamil Nadu. BJP is trying its best to come to power in both these states. At the same time, maintaining power in West Bengal is a big challenge for Mamata Banerjee’s TMC. It will not be easy for MK Stalin to come into government once again in Tamil Nadu.
Voting starts at 7 am and those who stand in the queue to cast their vote till 6 pm will get a chance to vote. The Meteorological Department has issued a heat wave warning for entire North and Central India including West Bengal. In such a situation, most voters can vote only in the morning and evening. Voting may remain low due to intense heat in the afternoon. More than 5.73 crore voters will decide the fate of 4,023 candidates in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Election Commission imposed ban
The Election Commission has directed the candidates contesting the West Bengal Assembly elections not to go out of their respective constituencies from 6 am on April 23 till the end of polling. In the first phase of elections, voting will be held on 152 assembly seats in 16 districts of the state on Thursday. A total of 1,478 candidates are in the fray here. More than 3.60 crore voters will cast their votes at around 44,376 booths. These include 1.84 crore men, 1.75 crore women and 465 third gender voters. As per a guideline, candidates should remain within their constituencies at the time of voting and should avoid indulging in any activity that may disrupt the electoral process, a senior official said. “All candidates are expected to ensure that the voting is conducted in a free, fair and peaceful manner and that voters can exercise their democratic rights without any fear or hindrance,” he said. The second phase of voting will be held on April 29 and counting of votes will take place on May 4.
