People born after 2008 will not be able to smoke, why was such a big decision taken?

United Kingdom (UK) Taking a historic step in the field of tobacco control, the government has passed a new law, which is considered a major initiative towards virtually eliminating smoking for the coming generations. Under this law, buying tobacco is completely banned for anyone born after 2008, this provision is the most important part of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill. Through this policy, Britain is not only controlling tobacco, but is also moving towards eliminating it gradually.

What is the new rule?

According to the new rules, if a person is born on or after January 1, 2009, he will never get legal permission to buy tobacco products. However, there has been no change in the rights of those who are already eligible to buy cigarettes. The legal age limit will be increased every year, due to which the access to tobacco will gradually end for the new generation. This rule will apply to the entire United Kingdom, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

This bill took a long time to pass. Its initial draft was presented in November 2024. After this, it was approved after detailed discussion and amendments in the House of Commons and House of Lords. Now after getting Royal Assent, it has got the status of official law.

When will this rule be implemented?

Key provisions of this law will come into effect from 2027, when the age-based restriction will be implemented. Britain’s Health Secretary Wes Streeting described this as a historic moment and said that this would save young people from lifelong addiction and serious health risks.

Why did Britain take this decision?

According to reports, smoking is a leading cause of preventable deaths in Britain. In England alone, about 64,000 people die from it every year, while millions of people are admitted to hospitals due to smoking-related diseases. The NHS costs around £3 billion each year to treat smoking-related diseases, placing a huge economic burden on the health system. This law is not limited to cigarettes only. Under this, strict control will also be imposed on vaping and other nicotine products, especially keeping in mind children and teenagers.

Strict rules will be imposed on the advertising, flavor and branding of vapes, so that youth can be prevented from getting attracted towards them. Smoking and vaping-free zones will be expanded around schools, playgrounds and hospitals.

What is Britain’s plan?

The British government plans to gradually phase out tobacco instead of suddenly banning it under the concept of a smoke-free generation. If someone is born in 2009, he will never reach the legal age to buy tobacco. In this way every year the new generation will be kept away from tobacco and with time the number of smokers will reduce.

Which people will keep buying tobacco?

Personal smoking is not considered a crime in this law. Those who can already buy tobacco will continue to do so. The main responsibility has been placed on the sellers, and strict penalties have been provided for illegal selling. The government has been given more powers to control the packaging, sale and licensing of tobacco products.
