Record breaking voting in West Bengal, 90% voting in the first phase, read in details
West Bengal Elections 2026 : Voting for the first phase of West Bengal Assembly elections is going on on 152 seats in 16 districts. Long queues of voters are being seen at polling stations since morning. In this phase, about 3.60 crore voters will decide the fate of 1452 candidates. This election is being held in important areas of North Bengal and South Bengal, which are considered very important from the electoral point of view.
Monitoring of ultra-sensitive booths
The Election Commission has deployed a record 2450 companies of central paramilitary forces to ensure peaceful polling. About 2.5 lakh soldiers are monitoring sensitive and ultra-sensitive booths. Tight security arrangements and webcasting have been made at each polling station.
New record in both the states
The first phase has seen record voting so far. Till 5 pm, 89.93 percent voting has taken place in 152 assembly seats of the state. Voting is taking place on all 234 seats in Tamil Nadu and 82.24% voting has taken place there. This is the highest voting so far in both the states.
Till 3 pm, 81.04% voting had taken place in Jhargram, 79.26% in Cooch Behar, 79.72% in Murshidabad, 79.88% in Bankura, 80.22% in Birbhum, and 76.54% in Darjeeling.
12% decrease in the number of voters
This election is being held after the ‘Special Intensive Revision’ (SIR) of the voter list, which has reduced the number of voters in the state by about 12%. This change has affected the electoral equations. A direct contest is being considered between the ruling TMC and BJP regarding the first phase.

In 2021, out of these 152 seats, BJP won 59 and TMC won 93 seats. This time it will be a big challenge for TMC to maintain its hold in North Bengal, while BJP is trying to strengthen its lead in this region. The entire country’s eyes are on the first phase of voting.
