Mann government’s action against drugs intensified in Punjab, ‘Yudh Nasheyan Viruddh’ campaign benefited
New Delhi: The ‘War on Drugs’ campaign going on in Punjab under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is now showing clear results on the ground. According to the latest data, there has been a tremendous increase in action against drug abuse. Large smuggling networks have been broken and the rate of conviction of culprits has also become much better than before.
Latest figures surprised everyone
According to media reports, the latest figures in Punjab show that action against drugs has become faster and more effective than before. A total of 73,541 NDPS cases were registered from 2022 to 2026. This is more than 40% increase from 52,255 cases from 2017-2021. The graph of arrests also increased from 68,064 to 98,596. It is clear that the smuggling network is being continuously attacked across the state.
Many harmful drugs including heroin were also seized
The seizure figures are testimony to the success of the campaign. There has been a huge jump of 148% in the recovery of heroin. Since 2022, 5,979 kg of heroin has been seized, whereas in 2017-21 this quantity was 2,412 kg. Opium also seized increased by 43% to 3,583 kg. The action against synthetic drugs has become more stringent.
The seizure of ‘Ice’ i.e. crystal meth increased from 17 kg to 93 kg, which is a jump of 447%. 6,064 kg of cocaine was recovered, which is around 6,852 kg earlier. This campaign has now reached the misuse of medicines. 8.7 crore intoxicating pills and capsules were seized between 2022-26. The government’s effort is clear: the supply chain that supplies drugs to the youth has to be ended.
Conviction rate reached 89%
Not only arrest, but also punishment is the priority of the police. The rate of conviction of culprits has now reached 89%. This is the result of strong investigation, solid evidence and better advocacy in the court. By registering the case, the file is not being closed, but is being taken to the end.
It is noteworthy that regarding this campaign, DGP Gaurav Yadav says that this is not just an increase in figures. The way of fighting drugs has changed. More cases and seizures show intelligence-based action. The increasing conviction rate shows that the police and the prosecution team are working together. Pressure has been created on the entire chain, from supplier to distributor.
He further said that this continuity has come because of the clear strategy of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. ‘War against drugs’ has now become the face of decisive action across Punjab. The government’s objective is clear: not just to show off seizures, but to break the drug network and end its reach, so that the impact is long-lasting.
