Education Reforms in Punjab: Collaboration with Turku University of Finland

Changes in education in Punjab

Chandigarh- Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government in collaboration with Turku University of Finland has taken steps towards bringing significant changes in education. This collaboration has made the teaching methods in the classrooms more enjoyable and practical, making the learning environment even more effective for the students.

Under this initiative, traditional rote learning methods are being moved towards a participatory and enjoyable learning environment. The program is part of Punjab’s education revolution, which focuses on incorporating global expertise into local classrooms. Under this, about 300 teachers will be trained.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann visited Kukulo-Moikoinen Early Childhood Education and Care Center during his visit to Finland. He said that this initiative is yielding great results by integrating global education expertise in local classrooms.

He said that this partnership is in the direction of efforts to strengthen the role of teachers in elementary and basic education. This is not a short-term intervention, but a long-term effort to incorporate child-centred and sports-based education in the education system of Punjab.

The program focuses on equipping teachers with research-based approaches, ensuring that these approaches are suited to the socio-cultural context of Punjab. Training sessions will be conducted in Chandigarh and Turku and Rauma, Finland, in which teachers will be exposed to new technologies through workshops and school visits.

The Chief Minister said, “Emphasis is being laid on making education joyful and interesting. Therefore, we are moving towards active participation instead of the old methods of rote learning.” He also said that teachers have been encouraged to design context-specific projects.

“Teachers have shown greater confidence in experimenting with new methods. A unique feature of this initiative is the emphasis on contextual adaptation rather than directly implementing foreign models,” the Chief Minister said.

He visited Turku University and Turku Teacher Training School and said the government now plans to expand the program through a ‘train-the-trainers’ approach.

“This collaboration is being seen as the foundation of Punjab’s comprehensive education reforms,” the Chief Minister said.
